The Kiwis are fighting to avert a heavy defeat in the first Test, with debutant Ryan Harris claiming his maiden scalp as the home team crashed to 4-106 in reply to Australia's 5-459 declared late on day two. But it was North who produced a career-defining performance, hammering an unbeaten 112 to keep Blues dynamo Steve Smith at arm's length with the Ashes just eight months away. Indians third-base coach Steve Smith never imagined any experience topping the joy of winning a World Series. Racing around the world with his daughter changed his mind. The bootful of beer wasn't bad, either.

She doesn't want me to say that   -Steve Smith

Every team that makes it to a regional championship is on a roll, but Newton Falls made it to its first title game after a near-perfect performance Wednesday night. III state champion Cleveland Central Catholic, Newton Falls knocked off undefeated East Canton 60-48, setting up Saturday's 7:30 p.m. final at the Canton Fieldhouse. The Tigers (20-5) jumped on East Canton 10-0, lost the lead briefly, then opened a 12-point halftime advantage.

They definitely have the look of a confident team, and I think that's a reflection on how their coach has had them prepared to play   -Sly Slaughter

Baylor's first road trip of the season got off to a rocky start. Just as the Bears were starting to right the ship, Mother Nature intervened. Due to menacing weather forecasts in the Norman area for Saturday, the Baylor baseball team's second game against No. 25 Oklahoma was moved to Friday, making for a doubleheader to open the Big 12 for both squads.

You can’t do anything about it.   -Steve Smith

A select committee of citizens and public officials soon will begin trying to resolve the sometimes conflicting interests of people who like riding ATVs and motocross bikes and their neighbors who object to the machines' dust and noise. The Burke County Board of Commissioners appointed the committee to study off-highway vehicles' use. The committee's first meeting will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Tom Eckels has modest goals for his second season coaching the Johnstown-Monroe High School boys lacrosse team. Eckels knows his players have the talent to improve on their 4-10 overall record from last season, but he would also like to see the program win its first postseason game. Last year, the Johnnies lost to Olentangy Orange 9-4 in a Division 2, Region 3 play-in game after finishing the regular season 2-7 in Division 2, Region 3 contests.

I'd say one of our strengths is the camaraderie between players   -Brad Couts
